Standards Based Grading

What is Standards Based Grading?
Standards based grading is a system where student scores are reflective of their proficiency on specific course standards.

At Turner Middle/High School, this system includes:
  • Identified prioritized standards for each course offered
  • Assessments tied to the prioritized standards that allow students multiple opportunities to show their mastery of the standard
  • Reporting of student achievement based on levels of mastery of the standards (what students know and are able to do)
  • Data teachers can use to adjust teaching/learning practices based on the needs of students
  • Encouraging student ownership/responsibility towards learning

A Summary of Standards-Based Grading
Implementing a standards based system requires all those involved (students, parents, teachers) to rethink the purpose of grading, teaching, and learning. Please consider watching the two videos below to learn more.

More Information
Standards based grading is not a new concept in education. Townview and Powers have been using a form of standards based grading for years. The staff at the middle/high school have spent time researching and learning about standards based grading from experts in the field. Below are some of the books and articles which helped shaped our philosophies and beliefs about teaching, learning, and grading.
